Them

A bullet from the back of a bush took Medgar Evers' blood.
A finger fired the trigger to his name.
A handle hid out in the dark
A hand set the spark
Two eyes took the aim
Behind a man's brain
But he can't be blamed
He's only a pawn in their game.
'Only a Pawn in Their Game' - Bob Dylan

Dylan works backward from the bullet that murdered Medgar Evers through the mind of his killer to those ultimately responsible : Them.

He does not stop with the bomber, the mass shooter or the racist actor and point the finger of blame, but ventures further than conservatives are willing to go: to examine the culpabilty of Everyman in the state of our world.

Something must be going on that society keeps pumping out these individuals to heap misery upon itself. But surely there must be someone to examine the roots of this engine of destruction. The 'free' press? One would hope, but an increasing paranoid populace seems to question everything through the lens of 'fake news' or 'political correctness'. Our 'religious' leaders? Far too often they can be easily classified and placed on the political spectrum and the more conservative they are placed, the greater thier silence on the subject (unless they revert to religious dogma). How about 'the law'? Here too, the ugly, partisan nature of politics has insinuated itself into our institutions with appointments guaranteed to produce a desired outcome.

Where does that leave us? "Between a "... you know the rest. So it's all down to you and me. To create a just society - whether 'a great' or a 'shining city' - we must all be willing to examine our own culpability in any and every event of hate and destruction that occurs in the world. We might not see it at all, or only dimly at best, but if we continue to look, we can hope to find the insight that allows us to act in a way that benefits us all.
